What to See in Colorado

olorado has got to be one of the most beautiful states in the United States. Having just about any kind of terrain imaginable, and a variety of climates to match - as well as rapid weather changes, there is something for just about anyone - all year around. About half of the state is a plain and capable of good crop growth, but the western half is mostly mountainous - providing any visitor with magnificent sights all over. Denver, the state's capital, is setup on the High Plains in the South Plate River Valley.

Of the many things that Colorado is known for, its mountains are what brings the people here. Offering unequaled scenic views all over the mountains, its beauty is a constant draw for tourists throughout the year. With over 550 peaks that are over 13,123 feet (4,000 meters), many of these are snow capped through most months of the year. The highest peak is Mt. Elbert, which stands at 14,400 feet - and it is also the highest peak in the
Rocky Mountains, too.

Many people come to Colorado just for the peaks that are over 14,000 feet - there are 54 of them. Some, that love to climb, make it a goal to do something like climb 14 of the 14'ers (as they are called) in 14 days, or 21 in 21 days. Most can be climbed without any kind of special gear, but great caution is always advised. Others, that love the snow, may try something like skiing all of them in a year, or some kind of similar challenge.

One of the most fascinating mountains has got to be Pike's Peak. At 14,110 feet, this mountain has the highest road on it in the US. Besides that, when you get to the top, there is a store with a restaurant - and souvenirs. The views are breath taking, and well worth the trip. Bring a coat, though, because even in August it can snow up there. For those who may not want to drive to the top, there is a scenic train ride that runs all the up. After visiting here, you will understand what inspired Katherine Lee Bates to pen the words to our own special anthem - America The Beautiful.

Colorado Springs is right next to Pike’s Peak, so you will want to stop in and see some of the many sights while you are here. Among them would have to be the beautiful red rock formations at the Garden of the Gods. A nearby place, Cave of the Winds, will give you a tour through 20 lighted rooms in this cave – the area’s oldest public exhibit. At the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, you can see and feed some of the 500 exotic animals that live there. Then, for a change of pace, you can visit the Pike’s Peak International Raceway for some NASCAR racing. Not far from Colorado Springs is the new museum, the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center in Woodland Park. This new 20,000 square foot museum features many dinosaur exhibits and has a working lab where the family can see real people cleaning and preparing real dinosaur bones for exhibits.

Mesa Verde National Park is another great place for sightseeing. This historic Indian village is considered one of the top 50 places in the world to see - according to National Geographic Traveler. These Indian adobe homes are built under a massive rock ledge and have existed for centuries, and then was abandoned around 1,300 AD. It is well preserved, fascinating, and you can even climb through and walk around the ruins. Also in the same Park, are many other archeological ruins that you can see while you are there. Mesa Verde is located in the Four Corners region of Colorado.

Another fantastic place to see is Royal Gorge. Here you will find the world's highest suspension bridge. It is more than 1,000 feet above the wild Arkansas River. You can drive across the bridge (there is a toll), or just walk across, for a great experience. There is also a tram that goes across the Gorge. It also holds a world's record, too, as being the longest single span aerial tram at 2,200 feet long.

While you are in the area of Royal Gorge, stop by and see a ghost town, and get a glimpse of the wild, wild west in action. Gunfights are held several times a day at the Buckskin Joe Frontier Town and Railway. There are also some other shows in the town, as well as a 30-minute train ride that takes you to the Royal Gorge. A restaurant in the town also gives you good food.

If you plan your trip ahead of time, you may want to spend some time on one of Colorado's dude ranches. Plenty of activities with an obvious way to get away from it all and relax a few days to a different lifestyle. Besides some of the roping and riding, however, dude ranches are now offering things like tennis, skeet shooting, biking, as well as fishing and hiking. Some places may even offer massages for those sore muscles after riding a few hours, and of course, there's the evening campfire - and some offer a gourmet meal. You select the options you want - and how long you can stay.

Colorado was made for whitewater rafting. With its many mountains and wild rivers you can find just about any level of whitewater rafting you want - just be sure to find out what level it is before you jump in your kayak or canoe. One of the most popular spots in the world is the Arkansas River - which is the river that runs under Royal Gorge. Rafting packages are available in many different locations and can be for an afternoon or a several day rafting trip. If you get a package, make sure you get it at least a month ahead of your trip - longer is better.

Other outdoor activities include golf, skiing, hunting and fishing. There are places all over the western half of Colorado where you can enjoy these activities to your heart's content. There are also a number of amusement parks such as Water World and Six Flags, the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park, Captain Zip Line Adventure Tours, and many more.

When Large Spaces Matter

Would you be surprised if we told you that Alaska is about 375 million acres in size but less than 1% of that is inhabited by humans? It’s actually double the size of Texas. Alaska lies at the northern tip of North America and separated from the rest of the US by Canada. Is that why Canada is so cold, or is it the other way around?

What images do you have of Alaska? If you said icebergs and snow-capped mountains, we’ll agree with you. If you said bears, we’d get all excited. We actually “trekked” to Alaska to get a good look at bears feasting on salmon, and for some odd reason the people we were traveling with chose Hyder, Alaska. Hyder is the twin sister city of Stewart, British Columbia. That’s how we crossed into Alaska. We landed at Calgary airport, drove all the way to British Columbia, and then bunked in at a bed and breakfast in Stewart. We were told by our host that the best time to go and watch the bears was around 7 pm. She said all we had to do was cross a dirt road and in less than a minute we’d be in Alaskan territory. That was neat, we thought. No more driving. We could visit two countries simply walking through a dirt road.

Hyder, Alaska is small so there’s not much happening. Its redeeming factor, however, is the reserve where the bears can be photographed chasing after salmon. There were hundreds of people already waiting in line, setting up their photographic equipment. Some even came with tents in case no bear would show up until 11 pm. But they were punctual alright and they put on a good show to the delight of weary travelers who came from afar.
But Hyder won’t tell you much about Alaska. It’s but a microcosm of this humongous state…

Alaskan Geography
Three distinct regions make up the entire state of Alaska:

* Inside Passage – this is southeastern Alaska. Miles and miles of islands and channels are situated in between the Pacific Ocean and Canada’s Coast Mountains. This is where the capital, Juneau, is and this part of Alaska has been labelled “picturesque” by frequent visitors.
* Northwest Alaska – it is closer to Russia than the lower 48 states and this region allows you access to the Kenai Peninsula and Denali National Park. From here you can get into Kodiak Island and the Alaska Peninsula, if you’ve got the intestinal fortitude and a strong sense of adventure. Anchorage is in this region.
* Aleutian Islands – they are a volcanic archipelago and they extend 1,200 miles into the Bering Sea.

Alaska: Present Tense

The population is tiny – approximately 650,000 people live here. Of that number, 16% are of Native descent.

The economy of Alaska depends on oil, mostly from the North Slope, although tourism, government and seafood processing bring in revenues for the state as well. Anchorage, for instance, is a busy shipping cargo center.

Much of Alaska is natural wilderness and the government has taken steps to protect its natural beauty – the national parks attest to this rare beauty.

Given that Alaska is the largest American state, visitors will spend a lot of their time travelling within the sites. Major cities have good transportation systems and road travel is excellent. However, a substantial part of southeast Alaska is not accessible by road. Visitors who have taken the ferries will be familiar with the Alaska Marine Highway where you get breathtaking views of fjords, glaciers and natural forests. The vessels that cross are often well-equipped with cabins and dining areas. If you like, you can even set up your tent on the outer deck.

Points of Interest - Tourist hot spots and attractions

Ketchikan – this is your first stop as you make it to the Inside Passage. Ask where the former redlight district is – it’s now Creek Street precinct. From here you will see wooden houses standing over the water and linked together by a boardwalk.

Southeast Alaska Discovery Center – travelers strongly recommend you visit this center. If you are often intrigued by totem poles, you’ll find at least 30 here, and most of them are over 100 years old.

St. Michael’s Cathedral – everything about this cathedral is Russian. It is known as a Russian Orthodox cathedral and visitors will see the Sitka Madonna, supposedly possessing healing powers.

Juneau – considered remote but nevertheless fascinating. It’s the busiest area of the Inside Passage and boasts of tall, modern buildings. The Red Dog Saloon is a must, and so is the Alaskan Hotel. Travel brochures suggest taking the tramway all the way up to Mount Roberts. If you feel like seeing a real glacier up front, travel to the northern end of the city where the Mendenhall Glacier sits. From here, you can start a hiking trail or go rafting.

Glacier Bay National Park – more glaciers! One way of getting here is via a cruise ship, or via the hamlet of Gustavus from Juneau. Watch out for the tidewater glaciers – they are the top attractions of this national park.

Fairbanks – this is the second largest city of Alaska. It lies just 150 miles south of the Arctic Circle (brrrr), but its long winter nights are not that dreadful since winter nights are the best time to view the aurora borealis and the northern lights (produced by clasing protons and electrons). Fairbanks can get extremely hot (90 degrees F) in the summer and extremely cold (minus 60 degrees F) in the winter.

Denali National Park – Alaska’s top attraction. You want grizzly bears, you’ll see them here. Dall sheep anyone? Go to Denali. Wolves? Indeed. Many visitors with sophisticated camera equipment come to Denali National Park to get a slice of the phenomenal wildlife activity!

So whether you’re into grizzly bears, glaciers or fly fishing, come visit Alaska. It will certainly be different from the west coast or the midwest and you can fill your scrapbook with pictures that are out of the ordinary!

For history buffs, Alaska became the 49th US state in 1959.

What to See in Tennesse

s of 2006, Memphis had just less than 700,000 in habitants, making it the largest city in Tennessee. This beautiful location is known for its great music, historical presence, and culinary superiority. As a home or vacation destination, Memphis is beloved by people across the United States. No matter what your tastes may be, Memphis has events and tourist destinations that you will love.

Memphis is May
One of the biggest events in this regions is Memphis in May, a month-long celebration of the city, its people and its heritage. It begins with the first weekend in May being the date of the Beale Street Music Festival at Tom Lee Park. This is lovingly known as The Mardi Gras of the Mid-South and features big-name performers as well as local talent. This history of this weekend can be traced back to the 1800s, but more recent performers included ZZ Top, Sheryl Crow, The B-52s, Seether, and Foo Fighters. Next, Memphis in May hosts International Week, in which a different nation is honored every year. In recent years, Spain, Ireland, Costa Rica, and South Africa have been honored. Other events during Memphis in May include the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, The FedEx St. Jude Classic (a PGA golf tournament), and a closing performance by the Sunset Symphony.
The National Civil Rights Museum

On April 4, 1968, Memphis became the final stop for Martin Luther King, Jr., a prominent civil rights activist. He was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel, and after the business was foreclosed in 182, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Foundation purchased the property at auction and constructed a museum around it. The multiple exhibits show aspects of the civil rights fight, from the arrival of the first slaves in 1619 to the assassination that occurred on site. Whether you are passing through Memphis or moving to the area, this is a great place to visit to learn a little about United States history and African-American rights.

Overton Park
Founded in 1916, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art is home to a very large and historic art collection. You can find this museum in Overton Park, and a visit here will allow you to view collections from the Italian Renaissance and Baroque time periods, as well as French Impressionism and 20th-century work. Local artists sometimes exhibit at this site as well. Also found in Overton Park is the Memphis Zoo, which has more that 3,500 animals and 500 different species. The zoo has 70 acres to call home and creates state-of-the-art homes for is inhabitants, which mimic the animals’ natural habitats. One of the most popular exhibits is CHINA, which is the home of two giant pandas. With 300 students, the Memphis College of Art (previously known as the Memphis Academy of Arts) is also found in Overton Park, as is the Overton Shell Auditorium.
Graceland
If you are a fan of music, that you probably already know that Graceland, the former home of Elvis Presley, is also found in Memphis. In 2006, the United States Secretary of the Interior designated Graceland a Historical Landmark. Presley himself purchased the home in 1957 because of its privacy and secure location. He died in the house in 1977 allegedly of a heart attack. His remains are found here, in a museum that opened to the public in 1982. You can find a number of Elvis-related artifacts here, like his musical awards, gold records, and jumpsuits.

Mud Island
A small peninsula on the Mississippi River, Mud Island is home to a museum, restaurants, and a water park. It is one of the hot tourist destinations for Memphis visitors, especially outdoor enthusiasts, as it is home to a number of bike trials and has areas for pedal boats and rafting. You can also see here a hydraulic scale model of the lower Mississippi River, which outlines historical facts about towns along the river and empties into the Gulf of Mexico swimming pool.

Other great places to visit in Memphis include the Memphis Botanic Garden, Beale Street, the Orpheum Theatre, and the Memphis Motorsports Park. If you like sports, you can check out a basketball game with the Memphis Grizzlies at the FedEx Forum, some triple A baseball with the Memphis Redbirds (a farm team for the St. Louis Cardinals) at the AutoZone Park, or a hockey game with the Memphis RiverKings at the DeSoto Civic Center. No matter what your interests, Memphis has something for you.

The State of Louisiana is made up of five distinct geographic regions, each of them offering a very different experience. From the bright lights and sparkling, quirky personality of Greater New Orleans to the thick, piney woods and solitude of Northern Louisiana’s Sportsman’s Paradise, the State of Louisiana offers five wonderful faces to the lucky visitor who gets to know it well.

Greater New Orleans
Located in the southeastern corner of Louisiana, New Orleans is the fabled Big Easy, the city that enchants visitors with its delightfully European architecture and atmosphere. New Orleans is a city to be experienced with all the senses. More than any other city in the nation, it has its own unique sound, its own taste, its own sweet scent. A visit to New Orleans is a journey into a different world, a world of lacy balconies and secret passageways in the Vieux Carre’, of decadent and luxurious mansions along St. Charles Avenues. Walk down Bourbon Street and listen to the very distinctive sound of New Orleans jazz. Wander in and out of the galleries and museums of the Warehouse District and feast your eyes on the artwork at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. Steep your taste buds in the smoky flavor of gumbo, the decadent richness of pecan pie and the irresistible flavors of fresh crawfish and trout. Cajun Country
Following the Gulf of Mexico and stretching up into south central Louisiana is the unique flavor of Cajun Country. Settled by French Canadian refugees centuries ago, Cajun Country has developed its own unmistakable personality that you won’t find anywhere else. Cajun Country is rightly known for its spicy, fiery foods, its hot music and its wide-open hospitality. The magnificent waterways and swamps are home to Great Blue Heron, snowy egrets, and alligators. Cypress trees dripping with moss create an atmosphere of silky mystery against the stunning blue skies. No trip to Cajun Country would be complete without a visit to one or both of the living history museums in Lafayette. The Acadian Village is a recreation of a historic village complete with blacksmith shop and doctor’s office and the Mississippi Mud Museum. Vermilionville is a second reproduction village that authentically portrays Cajun/Creole heritage in the 19th century. Plantation Country
The history of Louisiana would be incomplete without mentioning the magnificent Ante Bellum Plantations and mansions of Plantation Country. Many of the plantations in the southeastern part of Louisiana offer tours of the gardens and homes, and some accept overnight visitors and offer lodgings. As beautiful as the architecture and landscaping is, the true magic of Plantation Country lies in its stories and personalities. There’s not a plantation in the state that doesn’t have its tales of mystery, tragedy, Confederate spies and star-crossed lovers. Many of the plantations boast their own ghosts – and if you’re lucky enough to book a night at The Myrtles, known as the most haunted house in America, you may even get to meet one or two. Other plantations of note to visit while you’re in Louisiana include Nottoway Plantation, with a total of 365 doors and windows, one for each day of the year, and Houmas House, where the classic dark film Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte was filmed.

Crossroads
Located at the intersection of El Camino Real and the Natchez Trace, Crossroads offers a taste of all that is New Orleans. Crossroads is a wide swath across the center of Louisiana, where you’ll find everything from the stunning natural beauty of Kisatchie National Forest to the patterned elegance of the Cane River and other plantations. Among the most enchanting areas to explore, Crossroads offers the opportunity to travel El Camino Real, a National Historic Trail, and walk in the footsteps of history, or to navigate a canoe across the beautifully wild Kisatchie Bayou, or to hunt and fish in the unspoiled loveliness of Toledo Bend Reservoir. Crossroads is rightly famous for its bed and breakfasts, and for the enormous number of mansions and plantations that are on the National Register of Historic Sites. If you’re planning to stay in one of the cities of Crossroads, you might consider combining the two and staying in one of the many plantation houses that offer lodgings and breakfast. Dining in Crossroads is all about tradition – country fried chicken, barbecue and cornbread are on just about every menu – but there are a couple of absolute must-tries on any tour of Crossroads – Natchitoches Meat Pies and Cane River Cream Pie.

Sportsman’s Paradise
At the northern end of Louisiana are the beautiful, thick, piney woods of Sportsman’s Paradise. While Louisiana is well-known for its wealth of hunting, fishing and outdoor sports, nothing compares with the abundant beauties and rich recreational opportunities afforded by Sportsman’s Paradise. There are acres and acres of unspoiled woods and fields for bird-watching, fishing, hunting, hiking and other outdoor activities. The streams and lake bayous are famous for the size and abundance of the fish that are regularly pulled from them, and the weather supports all the outdoor sports and fun that you can handle. But there’s more to northern Louisiana than just sports. Shreveport and Bossier City offer glitzy nightlife and casinos, world class restaurants and fine hotels, and a short hop east to Monroe will put you on a riverboat ride for a delightful, lazy ride up the river. If what you’re looking for is relaxation, you’ll find it in any one of dozens of small towns in Northern Louisiana, where you can check into a local B&B and enjoy homemade peach cobbler and pecan pie, bottomless sweet tea and the view from a spacious front porch.

New Jersey - Tourist Spots and Attractions

ew Jersey couldn’t be farther from California in location and culture, but there’s one thing that these states having in common. If you’re living of visiting New Jersey, the first question that pops to mind for people learning about your stay there will always be: “North or South?”. California has San Francisco in the north and Los Angeles in the south. For New Jersey, the split is between New York in the north and Philadelphia in the south. Of course, there are places to visit in each state that don’t fall into these two categories, but nevertheless, you can usually define your travels by either your proximately to New York or your proximate to Philadelphia.

North New Jersey

North New Jersey (or just “North Jersey” to those familiar with the area) loosely includes Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, Union, and Warren counties. Some people also include Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, and Somerset counties in this definition, since they are officially part of the New York City metro area. Still others define North Jersey as everything north of Interstate 195 or everything north of the mouth of the Raritan River. When you’re in North Jersey and hear reference to “The City,” people are most likely talking about New York City. Many of the residents of North Jersey, in fact, commute to New York City for work every day.

One of the premier destinations in North Jersey is the New Jersey Botanical Gardens at Skylands, which is located in Ringwood. In the mind-1980s, one of the area’s historical Tudor manors and almost 100 acres of land were designated by the government as the State’s official gardens. This is a hot spot during the summer, especially on Friday nights with the gardens hosts their free summer concert series.

If you enjoy historical architecture just as found at the Botantical Gardens’ house, you might also enjoy the Sandy Hook Lighthouse, located just a short drive away in Sandy Hook. New Jersey is actually home to quite a number of lighthouses, but this is the older lighthouse still in operations in the entire United States.

If amusement parks and zoos are more your style, you can try visiting Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, Casino Pier and Breakwater beach in Seaside Heights, Keansburg Amusement Park in Keansburg, or Bowcraft Amusement Park in Scotch Plains. Remember, in North Jersey, you’re also not far from New York City, so you can very well take the train in for the day to visit the Bronx Zoo of the New York Aquarium in Brooklyn.

Before you leave North Jersey, some other popular destinations are total must-sees! In Stanhope, you have go to Waterloo Village, where you can travel back in time to see a colonial town as well as learn about the Native Americans that once lived in this area. Travel over to Netcong, and you can visit the Wild West City, a reconstructed frontier town, as well. Kids of all ages will also enjoy Northlandz in Flemington, NJ, where you can find a huge model train exhibit and doll museum.

South New Jersey

South New Jersey is more closely connected to a different city—Philadelphia. Most people consider Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, and Salem counties as those counties that are part of “South Jersey,” although, again, others consider certain roads or waterways the lines. Ocean County is sometimes includes as part of South Jersey, although it is officially a part of the Greater New York City Metropolitan Area.

In South Jersey, the Beach is king. Some of South Jersey’s most prominent beach communities includes Avalon, Cape May and Cape May Point, Longport, Ocean City, Sea Isle City, Stone Harbor, Wildwood, and Ventnor. Actually, if you drive up of down the coat, almost all areas have beautiful beaches. Atlantic City is a very popular destination, as gambling here is completely legal and their casinos are beginning to rival those found in Las Vegas.

As you travel inland from the coast, the primary focus of this area is less on tourism and more on residential. Like many residents of North Jersey commute to New York City for work on a daily basis, South Jersey is home to many, many people who work in Philadelphia and commute there every day. Some of these residential areas are historically “good” places to live. Morristown, for example, was honored as one of the best places to live in the United States in 2005. However, areas like Camden are known for their high crime rate.

There are no shortages of fun things to do in South Jersey, however. Some interesting and popular attractions include the Garden State Discovery Museum in Cherry Hill where kids can really go wild and the Three Forts Ferry, where you can ride from Fort Mott to Fort Delaware. Older children and adults may also enjoy the Burlington County Prison Museum, a spooky historical site that features tours of old cells and dungeons. And, if you enjoy historical locations, you can also visit the Old Barracks in Trenton of the Batsto Village and Wharton State Forest in Hammonton.

Also popular in South Jersey is the Walt Whitman and His Invincible City tour, a planned tour of Camden in the surrounding areas where Whitman once lives and wrote. This is a two-hour tour via motorcoach and includes visits to the Walt Whitman House, Cooper Street, and Harleigh Cemetery. If you enjoy Whitman’s writings, you’ll be in awe to see some of the places that actually really inspired some of his best poetry.

Although there is a bit of rivalry between North and South New Jersey, you’ll find that the state as a whole is a great place to visit. Whether you want to spend your days at the beach, travel back in time, or visit New York City or Philadelphia for a bit of culture and shopping, New Jersey is a great stop on your next vacation. And who knows…you might love it so much that you decide to live there!

What to See in Washington State

There are many things to see and do in the state of Washington. It is one of the major states in the pacific northwest of the United States of America. The state gets its name from George Washington, who was the first president of the United States. In fact, Washington is the only state in the United States that is named after a president.

What became the state of Washington came from the most western part of the Washington Territory. It became a state by being admitted to the Union as the 42nd state in the year of 2006. During a census in 2006, the state’s population was found to be 6,395,798. These people are called “Washingtonians.” In order to distinguish this state from Washington DC, it is often referred to as Washington State.

If you are planning to visit Washington, you are going to be heading to the northwestern most corner of the United States. The north boarder of the state is mostly along the 49th parallel. It shares its boarder with British Columbia, in the north, Oregon in the south, Idaho in the East, and the Pacific Ocean in the west. The region in which Washington lies is called the Pacific Northwest.

There are many things that you can see and do on a visit to Washington. There are many different opportunities for travelers, no matter what type of traveler you are or what type of things you are in to. There is always going to be plenty to see and do in Washington.

One of the largest cities, Seattle, is full of interesting sites and sounds. It was the home of the 1990s grunge music phase, and therefore the city itself is still full of music – live music, recorded music, and music of just about any genre you can think of. There are also many different museums that you can visit, which should give you a glimpse into everything from history to the arts to the sciences as well. And let’s not forget that the Space Needle is also here – one of the most well known landmarks that you should visit whenever you are in Seattle. You can eat at a restaurant at the top of this stunning, tall tower, and watch the city as it rotates around you.

The largest city, Spokane, is the heart of the Inland Empire of Washington State. This city can offer you the hustle and bustle of regular city life. And don’t forget camping – there are so many opportunities to camp in the mountains and the forests and woods that surround them as well. There are places in Washington that you can camp for days without seeing another living soul – and there are also great campgrounds to stay at if you’d prefer to have contact with the rest of the world.

If you are interested in seeing a bit of the history along with the sites, you can take the Cascade Loop, which is an area full of travelers that will take you right through the Cascade Range. You’ll be able to see small mountain towns, like Leavenworth. This will give you a great idea of what civilization in this area has always looked like, and not only that but you’ll also be able to meet wonderful people and enjoy local scenery, folklore, and food as well. No visit to Washington is complete without a drive along these scenic roadways, and a trip inside a small town store or two, just to get the feel for the place.

While in Washington state, you can also take in the Columbia River Basin. Here you’ll have plenty of chances to experience Washington and all that it has to offer. You can visit the Grand Coulee Dam. This is the biggest dam made out of concrete in all of North America – and it is also the third biggest electricity producer in the world. This amazing spectacle is something that your visit to Washington State should not be without.

No matter if you are a traveler who loves staying indoors and visiting museums, or one that values the history of good old fashioned rock and roll as its known today, or an outdoors enthusiast who wants to explore uncharted and unchanged wilderness, Washington State is going to have much to offer you. The size of California is vary large, which means that any traveling plans should probably be limited to one area of the State in order to see what is there. Its weather brings a near Mediterranean like climate, which means it is great for traveling almost year around, with it being cooler in the north part of the State. California is about 900 miles from north to south and about 200 miles wide. This means that just about any kind of terrain can be found there in this beautiful state.

Starting with some of the most well known natural places to see, would be the redwood forests. These largest trees on earth are up to about 370 feet tall - more than a football field, and have been there for centuries. While there, be sure to ride the SkyTrail - a tram that takes you above the trees (to a height of 742 feet) to give you a panoramic view of the trees and the coastline of California.

Yosemite National Park is one of the most beautiful places in California - and possibly on the earth. Known for its beauty because of its high waterfalls - three of the ten highest in the world, granite cliffs, sequoia trees, thousands of lakes and two rivers, this park is visited each year by more than 3.5 million people. There are more than 800 miles of hiking trails, about half that in roads, and 1,600 miles of streams. Probably the most heavily traveled area includes Yosemite Valley, which offers magnificent views of mountains and the valley. Another great place is at the Glacier Point & Badger Pass. This National Park is a must-see vacation spot for anyone passing through California. Winter activities are available - such as skiing.

Not far from Yosemite, are the highest and lowest spots in the lower 48 states. The highest - Mt. Whitney (just under 15,000 feet) is in the Sequoia National Park. About 100 miles east (as the crow flies) of there is Death Valley, which is 282 feet below sea level, and usually too hot in summer to travel. You can also find Crystal Caves in the Sequoia National Park, too.

Right at the eastern elbow of the state, on the border with Nevada, is beautiful Lake Tahoe. This hotspot is terrific if you are looking for an outdoor place to go hiking, boating, fishing, and much more. Couples looking to get married often visit it, too, and there are plenty of resorts and hotels available. In the winter months, it is probably the ski hotspot of the nation, with more ski resorts than just about anywhere. Over 125 inches of snow falls in Lake Tahoe area, giving it plenty of snow for all winter sport enthusiasts. Be sure to take one of the cruises that sails daily on the lake in the warmer months.

Not far from Lake Tahoe, over in Grass Valley, you will find the Empire Mine State Historic Park. This historic gold mine which operated for more than 100 years, is the site of the largest, richest, deepest and longest operating gold mine in California. Tours are available in a small part of the mine - since many of the tunnels are now flooded. Buildings and the mineshaft entrance are well preserved in the National Park. You will also find 12 miles of trails at the park for horseback riding, biking, and hiking.

California also offers much in the way of theme parks. These are mostly in the southern part of the state, and include parks such as Disneyland, Six Flags Magic Mountain, Universal Studios, California Adventure, and Knott's Berry Farm - most near Los Angeles. Near San Diego you have parks like Sea World, the Wild Animal Park, and the famous San Diego Zoo.

When it comes to visiting some of the cities of California, you will want to go to San Francisco. Here you can see the famous Golden Gate Bridge, which, at the time it was built was the largest suspension bridge in the world and it kept that title for almost 30 years. You can also take a tour from San Francisco to nearby Alcatraz - an island prison for many years. Take advantage and see much of San Francisco from the top of a double-decker bus that has had the top removed - giving you great viewing of the city.

Los Angeles is definitely another place to visit. Here you can find many exciting places to see around the city - including Hollywood. In Hollywood, you can drive down the famous Hollywood Boulevard - where you will find the Walk of Fame and Mann's Theater, as well as Rodeo Drive, which has many exclusive shops. The Queen Mary is also parked in Los Angeles - in Long Beach. Other things to see would have to include the J. Paul Getty Art Museum. The partial art collection of the billionaire is now exhibited in four buildings - and some say the architecture is just as unique as the art it contains. Another good place to go is to see Old Town in Pasedena. Here you will find many quaint little shops and restaurants - a great nightspot, too. One more great vacation place to go - that is quiet and different - the island off of the coast - Catalina. Here is a laid back sort of place where you can really get away from it all. Most of the vehicles here are golf carts, and life is lived slowly. It remains quiet - almost as if Los Angeles had not found out about it yet.

On the beautiful pacific coastline of California are many beautiful beaches - lined with palm trees. These beaches stretch from Mexico up most of the coastline, but becomes more rocky and cliff-like in the northern part of the state. In the south, swimming is good - but possibly even better for surfers - at least some of the time. In the north, where the water is cooler and not so comfortable for swimming, you can watch the whales in season, and see seals and sea otters. Hiking along the northern shoreline is also excellent, too.

The Big Picture

Florida can be enjoyed from seven different perspectives:

Florida used to be the 20th most populous state in the 1950s; today, however, it ranks fourth. The largest segment of the population are the retirees who easily adapt to Florida’s great climate, leisure mind set and low taxes. Don’t be misled though in thinking that Florida sports an “old face wrinkled by too much sun.” The state has attracted waves of younger people and have turned Miami into a swinging and trendy resort. Latin Americans have been coming to Florida since the late 1950s. The result? Jubilant festivals, salsa music and great cuisine!

Miami

Miami has two million people who occupy the city’s 2,000 square miles. If you’re feeling adventurous and want to imitate the local commuters, the public transportation system has buses, the Metrorail and the elevated Metromover located downtown. You also get a Water Taxi service, although its service is limited.

If you hear someone in Miami say “SoBe”, he’s referring to South Beach where you just might spot your favorite model or movie star. South Beach stretches from 6th Street all the way to 23rd Street. It is a busy place where you can rub knees with body builders, drag queens and beachcombers. If you want to sample and gawk at Art Deco buildings, this is the place for you.

Other places to see in Miami are the Holocaust Memorial (1933 45th Meridian Avenue), Bass Museum of Art (2121 Park Avenue), Metro-Dade Cultural Centre (101 West Fagler Street), Little Havana (home of Cuban immigrants who contribute to the perpetual gaiety and vibrance of the area), the Venetian Pool (De Soto Boulevard) and Coconut Grove Village (get off Coconut Grove from the Metrorail).

Gold and Treasure Coast

An incredible number of yachts – that’s what Fort Lauderdale is about. And what complements these yachts are of course the stately mansions that line the prime neighborhoods. Ride along Las Olas Boulevard – Fort Lauderdale’s busiest – and enjoy the eateries and boutiques.

Boca Raton is a wealthy city. Admire the architectural finish of the Cloister Inn, now part of the Boca Raton Resort and Club. Want to try some expensive shopping? Spend an afternoon in Mizner Park, named after Addison Mizner, an architect who had big dreams for Boca Raton.

Another rich winter resort is Palm Beach, stomping grounds of the rich and famous.

Orlando and the Space Coast

What you see is what you get! And what you do see is genuine amusement right here in Florida’s Orlando and Space Coast.

Start with the Kennedy Space Center (please call ahead to see if it’s open because it has to close occasionally for operations upgrades – 321-867-4636). It sits on Merritt Island and is known for the launch of Apollo 11 in 1969. It houses the Galaxy Center which has two IMAX screens.

Then you have the Walt Disney World Resort – the largest entertainment site in the world. Visit the theme parks – Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney-MGM Studios and Animal Kingdom. Note that Walt Disney receives millions of visitors; busiest times are:

* last week of February

You may want more of that Hollywood feeling after your Disney-MGM visit so head for Universal Studios Orlando. It has two theme parks and multiple choices to feed a hungry soul. Teens will love Hard Rock Café and Monster’s Café, while mom and dad would enjoy seafood at Lombard’s Seafood Grill.

Check out Kissimmee on the Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway. It means “Heaven’s Place” and it used to be a grazing place for cows. Not anymore. Instead you’ll get exciting rodeo shows. The state’s oldest rodeo is held at the Silver Spur Arena every February and July.

Northeast

If you’re still not “beached-out”, drive over to Daytona Beach – a favorite destination of hundreds of thousands of American students during spring break. Cars are allowed on the beach, by the way.

Our sister, a resident of Florida, recommends a visit to St. Augustine – a stretch of more beaches, marinas and golf courses. It has its own interesting history which you can swallow and savor on foot, or hop into a horsedrawn carriage. Ask to see the Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse, a structure built from cypress and red cedar wood.

If you’ve ever wondered what a sand pine forest is like, go to the Ocala National Forest where there are campgrounds and swimming activities. Deer and otter abound, and certainly a great place for bird-watching enthusiasts.

Panhandle

While in Tallahassee, visit the Old Capitol Building and the Museum of Florida History. While in Pensacola, visit the Historica Pensacola Village and the TT Wentworth Florida State Museum. This museum keeps old Coca-Cola bottles and other oddities from pre-Columbian times.

If you get as a far as Apalachicola, visit their National Forest and the John Gorrie State Museum.

Gulf Coast

Don’t skip Tampa. It is one of Florida’s fastest growing cities and has the ideal harbor. Many Spanish citizens were attracted to Tampa who began arriving as early as the 1500s. St. Petersburg is another favorite destination and people who are fans of Salvador Dali come to St. Pete specifically for the Salvador Dali Museum.

Check out the Pier with its numerous shops and restaurants. Remember the Ringling Brothers and their Circus? If you have time, drive to Sarasota, a rich cultural center with a lively waterfront. Drop by the Ringling Museum Complex which echoes a lot of Italian architecture. The circus owner, John Ringling, invested his $200 million fortune in Sarasota.

Everglades and the Keys

Don’t know if you like panthers, but if you’re curious, you just may see one in the Big Cypress Swamp – it is a popular lodging area for hundreds of plant and animal species. It also protects the endangered Florida panther. Travel writers say the one third of the swamp is covered by cypress trees gracefully standing along long, narrow forests. Its largest protected enclave is the Big Cypress National Preserve. From this point, take a break and enjoy the view.

A place that has stirred the passions of some travelers is the Everglades National Park – an idyllic setting for wildlife and fauna, not to mention 400 bird species.

And who hasn’t heard of the Keys? The Keys constitute a chain of fossilized coral islands that run southwest of the tip of the Florida peninsula. Key Largo is the largest island in the upper section of the Keys. Visit – better yet - go snorkeling in the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park – where the underwater is sheer wonder. Big game fishing fans can opt for Islamorada which has seven islands to offer for the best game fishing in the state.

In Key West, watch out for Bahama Village – where you get the best of the Caribbean beat. Visit the home of Ernest Hemingway where he lived for nine years. It’s where he wrote To Have and Have Not.

Any recounting of the attractions to be found in the State of New York is bound to leave something out. How can you give a capsule description that does justice to a state that encompasses the wild beaches on the far tip of Long Island, includes the whirlwind of activity and culture that is New York City, revels in the tranquility of the Catskills, encompasses the natural wonders of the Adirondacks and Finger Lakes region, and ends with the roar of Niagara Falls? There’s just too much state to take in all at once.

As it’s one of the most popular destinations in the world, it seems fitting to start with New York City. At 8.2 million residents, it’s the largest city in the US, and its diversity and cultural importance make it both a bellwether and a driving force in defining the US character as a whole.

The New York City most people know from television and movies is, essentially, the borough of Manhattan – the dense, skyscraper-shaded, narrow streets and teeming foot and vehicle traffic most closely associated with NYC are a Manhattan trademark. While the other four boroughs – the Bronx, Staten Island, Queens, and Brooklyn – have their own flavors, it’s Manhattan’s landmarks that most visitors come to see.

They say that New York is the quintessential walker’s city, and that’s really the way to go if you’re visiting. While a walk from one end of Manhattan to the other is doable (if you’re in great shape and have good shoes and a few days to spend), you may want to break it up into sections for your own comfort.

Start in Lower Manhattan, down by Battery Park. Visit Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty to get a sense of history. From there, it’s a short cruise up Broadway toward the Financial District, where you can see Wall Street and make a somber pilgrimage to the site of the World Trade Center and the 9-11 attacks. Go farther north through Tribeca (the “Triangle Below Canal Street”) and visit the art galleries and boutiques that make the area famous. Take side trips off into the worlds of Greenwich Village and Soho (“South of Houston”) for a taste of the counterculture life that so many artists have come to New York for, and don’t forget to stop at one of the many, many ethnic restaurants that showcase the city’s diverse population.

Grab a cab at some point and head up to Midtown, where the Empire State Building and Chrysler Building welcome you to the bustling heart of New York. Ride up to the observation decks on these icons and see the city spread before you. Go deeper into Midtown and take side trips to Central Park, Fifth Avenue, and the Metropolitan Museum; visit Times Square (once a seedy wonder, now a family friendly destination) for the staggering animated billboards and the many restaurants and theaters.

Uptown, you can see Harlem and its rich history, and visit the areas around Columbia and Fordham Universities – only two of the many fine schools to be found in the city.

Trips to the outer boroughs are also in order – in the Bronx you can see the Grand Concourse, take in a Yankees game, and stop into a Dominican restaurant for an inexpensive meal. Brooklyn, much maligned by Manhattanites for years but now having undergone a transformation into the “cool” place to be, has neighborhoods and art galleries that offer the sophistication of Manhattan with fewer pretenses. Queens and Staten Island, residential communities for the most part, still offer pockets of fine dining and plenty to see.

The city’s a destination in itself, and probably more than you can do in one trip. It’s said that it takes a lifetime to truly know the city. But there’s so much more to the state than just the city.

The beaches of eastern Long Island, out by the Hamptons, are well known as a playground for the ultra-rich. Here are mansions and estates on the water that rival anything you might find in Newport RI. The dunes of the farthest eastern section, Montauk, are relatively unspoiled and house the fourth oldest working lighthouse in the US, commissioned by President Washington in 1792 – but did you know that you’ll also find the oldest working cattle ranch in the country there? Deep Hollow Ranch has been in continuous operation since the 1800s and trail rides and a Texas-style barbecue are standard attractions.

Go north from the city and in short order you’ll find yourselves in the Catskills, long a vacation resort for the city dweller looking for peace and quiet. The hotels whose dinner entertainment provided the launching pad for an entire generation of comics and entertainers are still there, but the dairy farms that long provided the staples of the local economies are abandoned for the most part, leaving in their wake a landscape of open meadows and tall hills that teem with deer (watch out driving at night, as entire herds of 50-60 deer are not uncommonly found in the roads).

Farther north, above the Hudson River Valley, you’ll find the Adirondacks. These mountains offer kayaking, white water rafting, hiking, and rock climbing. Out west, south of the historic cities of Syracuse, Ithaca, and Rochester, you’ll find the Finger Lakes region. Glaciers in the last Ice Age carved long, narrow gouges into the land, leaving behind perfect lakes that serve as yet another natural destination for those looking for an outdoor getaway.

In the west of the state you’ll also find Buffalo, a city with a thriving art scene and close proximity to the natural wonder of Niagara Falls, a legendary destination for honeymooners (and barrel enthusiasts – visit the museum there for a look at the elaborate and sometimes poignant equipment people have used to try and make it over the Falls intact).

There’s so much to see in New York State that it’s hard to think of it as one destination. It’s easy to fly into almost any of the major cities from almost anywhere, so it’s easy enough to make New York State and its many regions a destination for more than one trip.

Visiting Alabama

labama is often considered to be the "heart of Dixie." At one time, Alabama was the capitol of the Confederate states - in Montgomery. Its fabled southern plantations, large fields, and very dignified gentlemen and their ladies has brought a certain southern charm to this part of the United States - which certainly still can be experienced today.

Alabama became a state in 1819, and has long history. Although economically hurting because of the Civil War until after World War II, Alabama has since become much stronger and now has modern cities and industry. This long history has given Alabama a lot of things to see and do.

Much history from the Civil War is every where evident, and there are a number of battlefields and memorials that remain in honor of those fallen in battle. A total of 194 land battles took place in this State.

Birmingham became a city in 1871 and quickly becomes the iron capitol of the South. Although operating on a smaller scale today, the steel plants in and around Birmingham, such as at Bessemer are still making some of the nation's steel.

One of the most popular places in northern Alabama, in Huntsville, is the U.S. Space and Rocket Center. Here you will find one of the best rocket museums in the world. There are a number of life-size rockets - including the 363-foot Saturn V rocket that launched the Apollo spacecraft. An IMAX theater presents historical movies of major space history and events, enabling you to live through those events as though you were there. Space Camp is another exciting program for different age groups and some of them go on for a week to provide exciting space age learning and adventures.

On the southern end of the state are the beautiful beaches of Alabama - Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. If you are looking to enjoy some excellent white sand beaches and water fun, Alabama has it. The warm waters of the Gulf provide you with the perfect opportunity to get away. You can also find charter-fishing boats on Dauphin Island, or get a dolphin cruise on a large 64-foot boat. See the power boat races that are scheduled to race just off of Orange Beach in mid August of each year. If you like to look at even larger ships - visit the battleship USS Alabama - in Mobile. Waterville USA, is another great place for water fun when you are in Gulf Shores.

Civil Rights certainly has some of its history laid down in Alabama and many historic places to see. Probably America's largest and best Civil Rights museum is the Birmingham's Civil Rights Institute. You can find many exhibits, archives, meeting rooms and much more in this 58,000 square foot museum. This building is right across the street from where the four girls lost their lives in an explosion caused by a bomb in the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. Another place to see is Montgomery's Civil Rights Memorial Center memorializing the deaths of many blacks between 1955 and 1968 - when Dr. Martin Luther King was murdered.

If you are more interested in outdoor adventure, Alabama has plenty of hiking trails and national forests. One of the most popular spots is the Little River Canyon that lies near Georgia in northeast Alabama. This national park is sometimes referred to as the Grand Canyon of the East and offers excellent whitewater kayaking opportunities. Here the canyon river drops a good distance offering even class V whitewater experiences in some places - one place has even been named Suicide. Not far from here is Russell Cave, where native peoples lived centuries ago. There is a museum and hiking trails there, too. Not far away is also the Chickamauga Chattanooga Battlefield, and a number of other battlefields, too, with many monuments testifying to the battalions and groups that were there. In the center of the State is the Oak Mountain State Park, which claims to be the best place to take your mountain bikes and get some exercise. With over 9,400 acres, you will find 18 miles of bike trails. Don't forget about the horse trails - 20 miles of these and many other outdoor activities such as golf, camping, and cabins - along with swimming and hiking.

Car racing is another thing that is very popular in Alabama, and most everyone has heard of the Talledega Superspeedway. Races take place at many different times during the year and you can make it an unforgettable family activity. In the same city is the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, the Talledega National Forest and the Jemison-Carnegie Heritage Hall, which has a large collection of historical photographs and many art exhibits by nationally known and local artists.

Alabama has one of the greatest courses of golf of all time. Not long ago, Alabama built a string of golf courses called the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. There are ten different spots for golf designed by the master golf architect, and many of them are listed in the top 100 golf courses in the world. You can find just about any kind of course that you want - ranging from easy to the much more challenging. Better yet, you can golf the whole string of them if you want – for a real challenge – all 432 holes.

For scenic visits, you need to check out Mt. Cheaha. Although not very high when compared to mountains in other states, it does stand at 2, 407 feet. On top of this mountain is a Civilian Conservation Corps tower, which has a glass-enclosed observation deck that lets you get a good view of scenic Alabama. Close at hand, are also a number of chalets that are glass-enclosed and make an ideal honeymoon spot near the top of Mt. Cheaha. A glass-enclosed restaurant is also nearby, providing you with wonderful scenery while you dine.

A number of other special events are very popular in Alabama. The annual Hot Air Balloon Classic is held every Memorial Day in Decatur. This well-attended Classic has many activities which includes everything from fireworks, to a classic car show, an antique tractor show, live stage entertainment, special children’s area and sports, to an international food court. This same city holds the south’s largest fireworks show every 4th of July, too. This is a large two-day festival that has many different music groups, demonstrations and sports activities for all ages, and the Audie Murphy Patriotism Award is given each year to an outstanding patriot. The Miss Point Mallard Pageant is held there as well, which is a preliminary pageant for the Miss America Pageant.

The Seven Wonders of Wales is a traditional list of notable landmarks in North Wales, commemorated in an anonymously written rhyme:

Pistyll Rhaeadr and Wrexham steeple,
Snowdon's mountain without its people,
Overton yew trees, St Winefride wells,
Llangollen bridge and Gresford bells.

There is supposition that the rhyme was written sometime in the late 18th or early 19th century by an English visitor to North Wales.[1]

The Seven Wonders of Portugal (Portuguese: Sete Maravilhas de Portugal) is a list of cultural wonders located in Portugal. The creation of the list was supported by the Ministry of Culture and organized by the companies Y&R Brands S.A. and Realizar S.A.

Initially 793 national monuments were listed by IPPAR as candidates, however in the first round of selections a board of experts reduced the number to 77. The contenders were further reduced to 21 finalist in four different categories by Conselho de Notáveis at the University of Évora in Évora, Portugal.

The six month long public elections started on 7 December 2006 to select the top seven wonders. Votes could be cast via internet, telephone and SMS.

Results of the vote were announced on 7 July 2007 at the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon, as were the results of the global New Seven Wonders of the World contest.

The Seven Wonders of Canada was a 2007 competition sponsored by CBC Television's The National and CBC Radio One's Sounds Like Canada. They sought to determine Canada's "seven wonders" by receiving nominations from viewers, and then from on-line voting of the short list. After the vote, a panel of judges, Ra McGuire, Roy MacGregor and Roberta L. Jamieson, picked the winners based on geographic and poetic criteria. Their seven picks were revealed on The National on June 7, 2007.

Wonders of the World

Various Wonders of the World lists have been compiled over the ages in order to catalogue the most spectacular natural and man-made constructions. The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World is the first known list of remarkable man-made creations of classical antiquity, and was based on guide-books popular among Hellenic sight-seers and only includes works located around the Mediterranean rim. Later lists include those for the Medieval World, the Modern World, the Natural World and others.

The Purab Herodotus (484 BC–ca. 425 BC), and the scholar Callimachus of Cyrene (ca 305–240 BC) at the Museum of Alexandria, made early lists of "Seven wonders" but their writings have not survived, except as references. They included the Great Pyramid of Giza, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, Mausoleum of Maussollos at Halicarnassus, Colossus of Rhodes and Lighthouse of Alexandria.

The Greek category was not "Wonders" but "theamata", which translates closer to "must-sees". The list that we know today was compiled in the Middle Ages—by which time many of the sites were no longer in existence.

Seven Wonders lists about the Middle Ages are existing historical lists for which there is no unanimity of opinion about origin, content or name.[1] These historical lists go by names such as "Wonders of the Middle Ages" (implying no specific limitation to seven), "Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages", "Medieval Mind" and "Architectural Wonders of the Middle Ages". The lists are more properly seen as a continuing type or genre in the Seven Wonders tradition than a specific list.

It is unlikely the lists originated in the Middle Ages. Brewet's calls them "later list[s]"[2] suggesting the lists were created after the Middle Ages. This is supported because the word medieval was not even invented until the Enlightenment-era, and the concept of a "Middle Age" did not become popular until the 16th century. Further, the Romanticism movement glorified all things related to the Middle Ages, or more specifically anything pre-Enlightenment era, suggesting such lists would have found a popular audience in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Some items found on some of the lists are not technically from the Middle Ages (according to modern historical standards), but we know the lists were not created by modern medieval historians, so such standards did not apply.

In the tradition of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, many other lists of wonders have been proposed, including both human feats of engineering and wonders of Nature. However, these lists are rather informal, and there is no consensus on any particular list.

In 2001 an initiative was started by Swiss corporation New Open World Corporation (NOWC) to choose the New Seven Wonders of the World from a selection of 200 existing monuments for profit.[15] Twenty-one finalists were announced January 1, 2006.[16] Egypt was not happy with the fact that the only original wonder would have to compete with the likes of the Statue of Liberty, the Sydney Opera House, the Taj Mahal, and other landmarks; and called the project absurd. To solve this, Giza was named an honorary Candidate.[17] The results were announced on July 7, 2007[18] and are:

In November 2006 the American national newspaper USA Today in conjunction with the American television show Good Morning America revealed a list of "New Seven Wonders" as chosen by six judges.[19] The wonders were announced one per day over a week on Good Morning America. An eighth wonder was chosen on November 24 from viewer feedback.[20]

The terms country, state, and nation can have various meanings. Therefore, diverse lists of these entities are possible. Wikipedia offers the following lists:

* the list of countries, listing countries in the sense of independent states (both those that are internationally recognized and generally unrecognized), inhabited dependent territories, and areas of special sovereignty.
* the list of sovereign states, listing sovereign states with information on the extent of their sovereignty. It includes both states widely recognized (de jure) to be sovereign and entities that claim sovereignty while exercising de facto control over (part of) their claimed territory.

Related lists are the lists of federations, unrecognized countries, autonomous areas, dependent territories, and territorial disputes. In some contexts country and state is also used for some subnational entities.[39] More lists of countries can be found at the lists of countries.

This list of countries, arranged alphabetically, gives an overview of countries of the world. It includes territories that are independent states (both those that are internationally recognized and generally unrecognized), inhabited dependent territories, and areas of special sovereignty.

Such inclusion criteria means the list does not treat the word "country" as synonymous with "sovereign state," as one may often find in colloquial usage. Note, that in certain circumstances and in certain languages the term country is understood in the most restrictive sense, thus including only the 193 entities mentioned under the first item below.

The list covers all areas under the jurisdiction of the listed countries, namely territory, territorial waters (including internal waters and contiguous zones), exclusive economic zone, continental shelf, and airspace.

The names of countries in the list are given in English and include both an English version of the short official or normative names (e.g. Afghanistan) and an English version of the (longer) official names (e.g. Islamic Republic of Afghanistan). The listing of any name in this article is not meant to imply an official position in any naming dispute.

o 1 state with general international recognition but not UN membership, governed by the Holy See (a UN permanent observer): Vatican City.
* 8 states lacking general international recognition, none of which are UN members, that may be defined as states in the body of customary international law and drawing on the precedent of the Montevideo Convention:
o 1 state, no longer a UN member since late 1971, recognized by 23 UN member states and the Holy See (Vatican City), and currently with de facto international relations with many others, the Republic of China (commonly referred to as Taiwan).

Hot Springs is the tenth most populous city in the state of Arkansas in the United States of America, the county seat of Garland County, Arkansas, and the principal city of the Hot Springs Metropolitan Statistical Area encompassing all of Garland County. According to 2006 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city is 37,847.[1]

Hot Springs is traditionally best known for the natural spring water that gives it its name, flowing out of the ground at a temperature of 147 degrees Fahrenheit (64 degrees Celsius). Hot Springs National Park is the oldest federal reserve in the USA, and the tourist trade that the famous springs bring makes it a very successful spa town.

Hot Springs is also noted as the boyhood home of former U.S. President Bill Clinton and famed American actor Alan Ladd. Reginald Muldrew, the infamous "Pillow Case Rapist", who was linked to 200 sex crimes in the Los Angeles area from 1976 to 1978, currently resides in Hot Springs [[1]] [[2]].

Hot Springs is also home to Oaklawn Park, a thoroughbred racetrack which has been in operation since 1904. The meet which is annually held from January through mid April each year is sometimes referred to as the "Fifth Season" and features the "Racing Festival of the South" during the last week of the racing season each April. Many triple crown contenders compete in the Arkansas Derby which is the big finale each year of the meet. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton, his brother Roger, and actor Billy Bob Thornton, all Hot Springs natives have been known to frequent Oaklawn Park in the past.

Along with its Bathhouse Row, one of downtown Hot Springs' most noted landmarks is the Arlington Hotel, a favored retreat for Al Capone.

Prior to the late 1960s, Hot Springs was a mecca for illegal gambling. Two Republican officeholders, Governor Winthrop Rockefeller and Circuit Judge Henry M. Britt, took action to stop the gambling.

Hot Springs was the home of prominent Democratic attorney Q. Byrum Hurst, a member of the Arkansas State Senate from 1950-1972 and the Garland County administrative judge from 1947-1950.

The Hot Springs newspaper is the Sentinel-Record, originally part of the Clyde E. Palmer chain, since renamed WEHCO.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 85.5 km² (33.0 mi²). 85.2 km² (32.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (0.36%) is water. Hot Springs is now a Metropolitan Statistical Area. This area also includes Hot Springs Village, a city of nearly 9,000 immediately north of Hot Springs.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 35,750 people, 16,096 households, and 9,062 families residing in the city. The population density was 419.7/km² (1,086.9/mi²). There were 18,813 housing units at an average density of 220.8/km² (572.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 78.86% White, 16.87% Black or African American, 0.55% Native American, 0.79% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.02% from other races, and 1.86% from two or more races. 3.80% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 16,096 households out of which 22.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.2% were married couples living together, 12.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 43.7% are classified as non-families by the United States Census Bureau. Of 16,096 households, 690 are unmarried partner households: 580 heterosexual, 78 same-sex male, and 32 same-sex female. (Note: Stigmatization of homosexuality may prevent same-sex couples from reporting themselves as such on the US Census, especially in more conservative areas.) 38.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.12 and the average family size was 2.80.

In the city the population was spread out with 20.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 23.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 88.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $26,040, and the median income for a family was $32,819. Males had a median income of $25,861 versus $20,155 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,961. About 13.7% of families and 19.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 30.7% of those under age 18 and 11.7% of those age 65 or over.

[edit] Natural Springs

The city takes its name from the natural thermal water that flows from 47 springs on the western slope of Hot Springs Mountain in the historic downtown district of the city. About a million gallons of 143-degree water flow from the springs each day. The rate of flow is not affected by fluctuations in the rainfall in the area. Studies by National Park Service scientists have determined through carbon dating that the water that reaches the surface in Hot Springs fell as rainfall in an as-yet undetermined watershed 4,000 years earlier. The water percolates very slowly down through the earth’s surface until it reaches superheated areas deep in the crust and then rushes rapidly to the surface to emerge from the 47 hot springs.

[edit] Discovery & Settlement

Spanish explorer Hernando DeSoto was the first European to see what Native Americans referred to as the Valley of the Vapors when he and his men reached the area in 1541. Members of many Native American tribes had been gathering in the valley for untold numbers of years to enjoy the healing properties of the thermal springs. There was agreement among the tribes that they would put aside their weapons and partake of the healing waters in peace while in the valley.[2]

In 1673 Father Marquette and Joliet explored the area and claimed it for France. The Treaty of Paris 1763 ceded the land back to Spain, however in 1800 control was returned to France until the Louisiana Purchase of 1803.

In December 1804 Dr. George Hunter & William Dunbar made an expedition to the springs, finding a lone log cabin and a few rudimentary shelters used by people visiting the springs for their healing properties. In 1807 a man named Prudhomme became the first settler of modern Hot Springs, and he was soon joined by John Perciful and Isaac Cates.

On August 24, 1818, the Quapaw Indians ceded the land around the hot springs to the United States in a treaty. After Arkansaw became its own territory in 1819, the Arkansas Territorial Legislature requested in 1820 that the springs and adjoining mountains be set aside as a federal reservation. Twelve years later, in 1832, the Hot Springs National Park was formed, granting federal protection of the thermal waters and giving Hot Springs the honor of being the first “national park” to be designated for such government protection. Hot Springs National Park was formally created in 1911.[3]

Bathhouse Row, consisting of eight turn-of-the century structures, lies within the National Park and is supervised by the Park Service. Only one of the bathhouses, The Buckstaff, remains in operation. However, another bathhouse, the Fordyce, has been converted into a museum to give tourists a glimpse into the fascinating past of the city. The federally supervised natural thermal waters are also used for thermal bathing at several downtown hotels, health spas and the Arkansas Rehabilitation Center. The water is available free for drinking at several fountains in the downtown area.

The city has been a tourist mecca for generations due to the thermal waters and attractions such as Oaklawn Park, a thoroughbred racing facility; Magic Springs & Crystal Falls theme parks; a fine arts community that has earned the city the No. 4 position among “America’s Top 100 Small Arts Towns”; the Hot Springs Music Festival; and the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival, held each October at the historic Malco Theater, one of the top documentary festivals in the world, attracting numerous Academy Award winning films and producers.

Other annual events in town include the Hot Springs Jazz Festival in Sept (free) , The Hot Springs Blues Festival in Sept (free), The downtown Bathtub Races (spring), The Big Barbecue Cook off (spring and fall), the World's Shortest St. Patrick's Day Parade every March 17th, and The outdoor skating rink November through January.

Educational institutes and conventions are also important events in the Spa city. Perhaps the most popular of these events is the Hot Springs Technology Institute (HSTI) drawing over 1300 participants each June. Hot Springs is also home to the annual alternate reality game Midnight Madness, based on the movie from which it gets its name. Teams race throughout the city at night, solving clues based on difficult puzzle and physical challenges. Games last 12 hours or more, with the winning team designing next year's game.

The Hot Springs Metropolitan Statistical area is rated as the 13th most dangerous MSA of the 344 MSA in the U.S.A. The ranking is based on actual 2005 felony statistics tabulated by Morgan-Quitno [[5]]. The average city in the top 25 most dangerous MSA has a population in excess of 1.27 million. Hot Springs is the only MSA on the most dangerous list with a population of under 100,000.

Well, for starters, you go about it very boldly. You solicit opinions from travel writers and photographers, poll your colleagues, and talk to outdoor enthusiasts, historic preservationists and relatives who, every time you see them, seem to have just returned from another fabulous trip. In putting together USA WEEKEND Magazine's annual summer travel story, our editors did all that. To help frame the unenviable -- all right, nearly impossible -- task of limiting America's most beautiful attractions to a mere 10, we also offered a few guidelines. Nominees had to be publicly accessible and reasonably well-known. Iconic stature wouldn't hurt a place's chances, and, given the want of any objective way to measure beauty, sentimental favoritism was an acceptable tiebreaker. In other words, we instructed our experts to follow their hearts. After reading the top 10 list they produced, we hope you'll do the same.

1. Red Rock Country (Sedona, Ariz.)
Ever since the early days of movies, when Hollywood has wanted to show the unique beauty of the West, it has gone to Sedona, a place that looks like nowhere else. Beginning with The Call of the Canyon in 1923, some hundred movies and TV shows have been filmed in and around town. We fell under Sedona's spell, too, and while debating our No. 1 spot kept returning to it for the same reasons Hollywood does: The area's telegenic canyons, wind-shaped buttes and dramatic sandstone towers embody the rugged character of the West -- and the central place that character holds in our national identity. There's a timelessness about these ancient rocks that fires the imagination of all who encounter them. Some 11,000 years before film cameras discovered Sedona, American Indians settled the area. Homesteaders, artists and, most recently, New Age spiritualists have followed. Many cultures and agendas abound, but there's really only one attraction: the sheer, exuberant beauty of the place. People come for inspiration and renewal, tawny cliffs rising from the buff desert floor, wind singing through box canyons, and sunsets that seem to cause the ancient buttes and spires to glow from within. In a nation with a wealth of stunning cities full of compelling stories, ranking Pittsburgh as the No. 2 beauty spot is perhaps our most surprising choice. But the Steel City's aesthetic appeal is undeniable, as is its very American capacity for renewal. Standing atop Mount Washington, the steep hill that rises giddily on the city's south side, sightseers enjoy the unforgettable panorama of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers flowing together to create the mighty Ohio, that waterway so essential in the nation's settlement. The rivers cup downtown's lustrous Golden Triangle, where landmark skyscrapers thrust upward like rockets. At night, lights twinkle on no fewer than 15 bridges. Almost as breathtaking as the vista itself is the urban renewal that made it possible. A century ago, a pall of smoke lay so thick over town that streetlights burned all day. 3. The upper Mississippi River
For third-place honors, we turn to an area less celebrated than others, but nonetheless packed with the unique beauty our nation abounds in. Its low profile makes it all the more charming. To truly appreciate the Mississippi, we leave the familiar territory of Huck and Tom and take a spin on the Great River Road as it runs alongside Old Muddy's upper reaches through Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota. One of the nation's most scenic routes, it winds over hills, atop towering bluffs and through one 19th-century river town after another. The sites along the way read like chapters in American history. Ancient Indian burial mounds punctuate rolling parkland, sidewheelers ply the river, and villages on either bank present fine examples of Steamboat Gothic, the ornate architectural style born in the heyday of river travel. In Galena, Ill., 85% of the buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places. At Trempealeau, Wis., the Trempealeau Hotel has offered haven to watermen since 1888. The whole laid-back region's real draw is the river itself. Steady and timeless, it makes one fine traveling companion as it rolls toward the Gulf.
4. Hawaii's Na Pali Coast
At the country's extreme western edge, half a world away from the cradle of the American Revolution, we gain a flash of insight into the restlessness that drove our forebears from New England to the Pacific Ocean and beyond. They pushed west in search of paradise. Amid the coral reefs, beaches and mist-shrouded volcanic peaks of Hawaii's oldest island, they surely found it. Along the Kalalau Trail on the Na Pali coast of Kauai, verdant mountains plunge 4,000 feet into the sparkling Pacific. A short hike inland, where Hanakapi'ai Falls pours into a crystal pool and tropical flowers dapple the lush hillsides, the play of color and light creates the effect of an Impressionist painting gone native. 5. Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco
Engineering marvel, art deco icon, monument to progress: The Golden Gate Bridge does much more than connect San Francisco to Marin County. Named for the strait it spans -- the 3-mile passage between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific -- the bridge is a grand symbol of one of the world's most striking cities. Completed in 1937, the $35 million structure of concrete and steel embodied a city's unquenchable spirit -- and, by extension, the nation's. Set off by its signature orange paint job, twin 750-foot towers that seem to disappear into the heavens and spidery cables that stretch like harp strings, the Golden Gate was unlike anything else ever built. At 4,200 feet, the main suspension span was easily the world's longest. (Almost 70 years later, it ranks seventh.) Facts and figures tell only a partial story: Admired as a practical feat, the bridge is beloved as a work of art, one of the greatest the 20th century produced in any medium. 6. Grafton, Vt.
Had the French explorer Samuel de Champlain arrived in Vermont in the autumn of 1609 instead of summer, he never would have dubbed the land "Vert Mont." In fall, the foothills of the state's namesake Green Mountains blaze red, yellow and orange. Among the choicest spots to take in nature's annual art show is Grafton, right, one of the state's prettiest hamlets and, thanks to the efforts of the non-profit Windham Foundation, arguably its best preserved. The foundation has rehabilitated more than 50 historic buildings, including the Old Tavern at Grafton, a one-time stagecoach stop. Other man-made attractions include the award-winning Grafton Village Cheese factory, a pair of graceful New England churches, a nature museum, a smattering of art galleries and the almost obligatory covered bridge. But the compact village of 600 isn't really about picturesque buildings. It's about the Yankee virtues of simplicity, modesty and saving things that matter. 7. Jenny Lake in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming
America has older mountains than the Tetons, and higher ones. But it has none more dramatic. The jagged range was formed 6 million to 9 million years ago, when grinding pressure along the Teton Fault caused two massive sections of the Earth's crust to come unhinged. On the rift's west side, a block reared up to form the Teton range. On the east, a separate block buckled under, creating the valley known as Jackson Hole. This geologic violence is what makes the Tetons so spectacular: Forgoing the nicety of foothills, a dozen 12,000-foot peaks shoot abruptly from the valley floor, literally an eruption of granite. Amid the grandeur lies glittering Jenny Lake, left. Named for the Shoshone bride of a 19th-century trapper, the pristine, 2.5-mile-long body of water mirrors the mountains' glory. Beloved by canoeists, hikers and honeymooners, lovely Jenny is also popular with elk, moose and trumpeter swans. 8. From Key Largo to Key West in Florida
So little actual land, so many associations: coral reefs, Key deer, manatees, pirates, Key lime pie, silver palms, Bogart and Bacall downing gangsters in Key Largo, Hemingway downing mojitos at Sloppy Joe's in Key West. Florida's freewheeling Keys, it has been said, is where things settle when you pick up the continent and shake it. This much is certain: In the Conch Republic, as Key West is sometimes called, a spirited sense of American individualism prevails. Skipping down the fragile, ribbon-thin 110-mile archipelago on U.S. 1, visitors see things that exist nowhere else in the country. With a peak elevation of 18 feet, the land mass can seem but an afterthought to the shimmering Atlantic on one side and the blue-green Gulf on the other. In places the only thing separating them is the roadway itself, panoptic water enchanting travelers with the deliciously disorienting sensation that they've become one with the sea. 9. Clingmans Dome along the Appalachian Trail in Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Winding through 14 states as it makes its rugged way from Georgia to Maine, the entire Appalachian Trail ranks high on any list of scenic gems. First proposed in 1921 by hiking enthusiast Benton MacKaye, the trail came into service as a continuous footpath across the Eastern states in 1937. A monumental achievement, and one that has given countless Americans fresh appreciation for the vastness of the land, it rewards exploration of every well-trod mile. Clingmans Dome, at Tennessee's eastern edge, rises to 6,643 feet, the highest point along the 2,172-mile trail. The surrounding Smokies support more than 4,000 species of plants, 230 types of birds and some 65 mammal species. From a lookout at the summit, hikers gaze upon a fog-streaked wilderness and see the East as it existed hundreds of years ago, lush forest stretching unbroken in every direction. 10. The squares of Savannah, Ga.
In this charmed city, the urban and the pastoral gracefully mingle in a uniquely Southern way -- that is, with gentility and a generous dollop of mystery. Shaded by live oaks, perfumed by magnolias and surrounded by historic buildings, 22 enchanting public squares (including Columbia Square, above) beckon like secret gardens. Feasts for the eyes, balm for the soul, the vest-pocket parks serve as gathering places, serene retreats and tourist attractions all rolled into one. Spanish moss romantically drapes Pulaski Square, named for Revolutionary War hero Gen. Casimir Pulaski. At Chippewa Square, lorded over by a statue of Georgia's founder, James Oglethorpe, pay respects to the man who drew up Savannah's triumphant 18th-century street plan. Stevens Point, Wisconsin

tevens Point, Portage County, is located in the central part of the U.S. State of Wisconsin. It is the largest city and the county seat. As of the 2000 US Federal Census, the population was 24,551. The city was incorporated in 1858.

Stevens Point was named after its founder, George Stevens, who ran several saloons on what is today known as "The Square." Loggers on the Wisconsin River found this a convenient stopping point, as the river bends slightly and one could tell from far upstream whether Stevens' point was open for business.

(A local legend also claims that Stevens Point is a corruption of "Stevens Pint", a reference to Stevens' alleged practice of serving whiskey by the pint.)

The city is home to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP), a small university with almost 10,000 students known for its graduate and undergraduate natural resource degrees, and its forestry, paper science, biology, and teaching degrees. The university also has strong programs in the arts, communications, and sciences. An MBA program is also available.

Stevens Point hosts the world's largest trivia contest, run by UWSP's radio station, WWSP-FM.

Together with surrounding communities, the Stevens Point micropolitan area was, according to the 2000 census, home to 48,123 people. The city forms the core of the United States Census Bureau's Stevens Point Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Portage County (2000 population: 67,182).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 42.1 km² (16.2 mi²). 39.7 km² (15.3 mi²) of it is land and 2.4 km² (0.9 mi²) of it (5.61%) is water.

It is surrounded by several smaller villages and towns, including Plover, Whiting, Custer, Park Ridge, and the Town of Hull. On average, the temperature ranges from 20° to 80° Fahrenheit. All four seasons can be distinctly observed, with snow falling most heavily in December and January and temperatures rising to their average summer levels of about 70° in July and August.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 24,551 people, 9,305 households, and 4,652 families residing in the city. The population density was 619.2/km² (1,603.2/mi²). There were 9,749 housing units at an average density of 245.9/km² (636.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 92.53% White, 0.47% African American, 0.46% Native American, 4.78% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.48% from other races, and 1.19% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.61% of the population.

There were 9,305 households out of which 23.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.8% were married couples living together, 8.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 50.0% were non-families. 33.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 2.95.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 18.2% under the age of 18, 30.8% from 18 to 24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, 15.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 26 years. For every 100 females there were 92.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $38,178, and the median income for a family was $53,176. Males had a median income of $37,894 versus $28,114 for females. The per capita income for the city was $23,510.

Stevens Point is home to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, established in 1894 as the Stevens Point Normal School. The university currently enrolls approximately 8700 students in both undergraduate and graduate degree programs. It boasts a student-to-faculty ratio of 20:1 and has the highest percentage of undergraduate courses taught by regular faculty in the entire UW System. It is consistently named one of the top Public Midwestern Universities-Master's in U.S. News and World Report’s College Rankings.

Other educational institutions include Mid-State Technical College, Stevens Point Area Public School District and Stevens Point Area Catholic Schools. High Schools include Stevens Point Area Senior High (SPASH) and Pacelli High School.

Major employers in the area include Stora Enso North America paper mill, Sentry Insurance, The Noel Group (travel and insurance), Copps Corporation, Donaldson Company, Skyward (software design), Sunrise Medical, Delta Dental (insurance), Lands' End, Associated Bank, Canadian National Railroad, Worzalla Publishing, and the Stevens Point Brewery.

Stevens Point and its surrounding communities are developing into a regional destination for hotels, shopping, and restaurants. The city is located along the Wisconsin River, at the intersection of Interstate Highway 39 and US Highway 10. Stevens Point is a midway point for affluent tourists heading to Wisconsin's North Woods from large cites such as Milwaukee, Madison, and Chicago. Major retailers are moving into the area, large hotels are being built, and many restaurants are pouring into the Stevens Point area.

Stevens Point is located in the geographic center of Wisconsin, making it a popular destination for state conventions and state youth sporting events including soccer and hockey. The hospitality industry is rapidly growing in Stevens Point with the addition or remodeling of over 500 hotel rooms since 2004.

The area has 20 developed parks, a 26-mile bicycle and jogging trail (The Green Circle Trail) that surrounds and winds through the city, an 18-hole Robert Trent Jones-designed golf course, a premier country club, public and private elementary/high school systems, a community theater group (cwACT), a children's museum, many small businesses (including the locally famous Belts' Soft Serve), churches of various denominations, and a group of museums run by the Portage County Historical Society, including the Beth Israel Congregation Museum, located in the former synagogue (the synagogue has been defunct since 1985). City-wide events range from the Fourth of July Riverfront Rendezvous to the Portage County Cultural Festival.

The downtown area was designated a "Wisconsin Main Street Community" and offers unique specialty shops, a wide variety of restaurants, an enclosed shopping mall, and many offices. The city and county offices are located downtown as well as a major bank regional headquarters and two major insurance companies. The downtown also offers a vibrant nightlife on "The Square" that is very popular with college students.

The city is served by two airports. Commercial service is available through Central Wisconsin Airport (CWA), which is located midway between Stevens Point and Wausau. This airport is served by three major airlines. General aviation, air cargo, and charter flights utilize the Stevens Point Municipal Airport (STE).
